UrFU students won “Silver Cup” at the championship in China

A team of graduate students of UrFU Institute of Radioelectronics and Information Technologies (Oleg Golubev, Ilya Kolmogortsev, Rostislav Kosivets, Maria Beketova, Aleksander Chernoskutov) has received a first class award "Silver Cup" of the Student Supercomputer Challenge ASC. Students were the only representatives of Russia in the final of the world's largest student championship on supercomputers.

The participants were asked to optimize a number of tasks on Inspur NF5280M4 server platform. Each team chose its cluster configuration, but it was not forbidden to use their own equipment. The only restriction was the power consumption; the cluster should not consume more than 3000 Watts.

"UrFU team has designed a cluster of 10 nodes with Intel Xeon E5 2670v3 processors of high speed switched network InfiniBand. On two nodes were installed two additional co-processor Intel Xeon Phi31S1P, - says the advisor, professor of the chair of computational methods and mathematical physics of the Institute of Radioelectronics and Information Technologies Elena Akimova. – The Participants had to run tests and optimize the tasks proposed by the organizers of the competition on the assembled cluster. "

We would like to note that the competition took place in Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Wuhan, China) on April 18-22. In total, the tournament was attended by 175 teams from the universities of the United States, Colombia, Hungary, China and Russia.
