Svetlana Alexievich was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature

UrFU philologists are deeply proud to have nominated the writer from Belorussia for a prestigious award

Svetlana Alexandrovna Alexievich,  a Belarusian investigative journalist and prose writer, was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature "for her polyphonic writings, a monument to suffering and courage in our time". She is the first Russian-language writer who has received this award for the last 29 years (Joseph Brodsky was awarded in 1987).

It’s worth saying that the staff of the department of Russian literature of UrFU put up Svetlana Alexievich for the award previous year but the prize went to France.

However, as Leonid Bykov, the head of the departmenrt, marks, Svetlana Alexievich has won deservedly the prize. Her achievements comprise numerous translations into many languages, publications in foreign countries and receipt of international awards.

Being a Belorussian citizen, Svetlana Alexievich writes in Russian. Her most notable books are ‘War’s Unwomanly Face’, ‘Zinc-Covered Boys’, ‘Enchanted with Death’, ‘Voices from Chernobyl’, ‘The Last Witnesses: the Book of Unchildlike Stories’, ‘Second-hand Time’.
