The Ambassador of France Spoke about Country`s Priorities in Foreign Policy

Sylvie Bermann talked to the Rectorate and students

The Ambassador of France in Russia Sylvie Bermenn spoke about the course in international politics and France-Russia relations. On December, 4 she had a meeting with the Rectorate and gave a lecture for UrFU students about the priorities of the Fifth Republic in foreign policy. According to Ms Bermann, the main priorities in foreign policy include solving international crises and peace keeping (France is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council), preservation of strong and integrated EU, support of the African countries, peaceful settlement of conflicts (Syria, Ukraine, North Korea) and other global problems such as climate change.

“In reference to France-Russia bilateral relations we can say that after Crimea had become part of Russia they got worse. The President of France decided to resume the relations with Russia, therefore in May this year Mr Macron invited Vladimir Putin to Versailles,” noted the Ambassador. “Since that meeting the presidents have repeatedly had phone-conversations and were discussing Global crises. We are sure that global problems have to be discussed with Russia. If Russia doesn’t participate there will be no solution of these problems.”

UrFU is developing bilateral relations with French universities and scientists. Thanks to the Government grant for research project “Return to Europe: Russian Elite and European Innovations, Regulations and Models (XVIII – beginning of XX)” in 2013, the Laboratory of Editional Archaeography opened in UrFU. The Supervisor of the Laboratory and its Head scientist is the Professor of Pantheon-Sorbonne University  Marie-Pierre Rey. The Supervisor and head of the Laboratory from the Russian side is Doctor of Historical Sciences Dmitriy Redin.

The Nobel Prize co-laureate Professor Jean Jouzel is another famous Frenchman that works for the University. He is the head of Climate and Environmental Physics Laboratory that was also founded as a part of the grant.

Ural Federal University has got a lot of agreements with French Universities, for example, Double degree program between UrFU Graduate School of Economics and University of Lille. The French Centre for Language & Cultural Studies operates in the UrFU Building on Lenina street.
