University graduates organize an exciting 72-hour marathon with non-standard tasks

ICFP Programming Contest kicks off on July 17, an annual open online competition coined by functional programmers. In spirit, this is an entertaining 72-hour marathon with unexpected tasks and, according to the organizers, "difficult to convey feelings from participating."

Unlike other competitions, teams of any size gather to participate in the ICFP Contest. In 2019, there were teams from 1 to 12 people, and there were three in the median team. Age of participants is not limited. In 72 hours you need to solve only one problem - but always unexpected, complex and multifaceted. For example, in 2018, it was necessary to optimize 3D printing using nanobots. And in 2016, it was necessary for origami - a flat figure made of electronic paper - to restore its simplest scan in rational coordinates.

ICFP Contest began to gain popularity in Russia thanks to Dmitry Astapov and his exciting report on participation in 2006. Good results are achieved by teams with an olympiad past. In addition to algorithmic training, team spirit and the ability to organize the development process for 72 hours are very important here.

This year, for the first time in the 23-year history of the competition, its organizers are from Russia, moreover, graduates of the Ural Federal University. Only eight people who want to maximize the popularity of this competition in our country.

“Usually the largest number of participants is from the USA and Japan, and Russia is in third place,” the organizers say. - But we are sure that there will be those in the local community who will like this non-standard contest. Where else, if not here, to look for teams that can give a fitting rebuff to the current winners.”
