What ensures the growth of UrFU in the ranking of countries in Emerging Europe and Central Asia

Experts highly evaluated the academic reputation of the university and citation index of the scientific publications

The new and expanded edition of the QS University Rankings: Emerging Europe and Central Asia is released today. Ural Federal University ranked ninth among Russian universities in “QS University Rankings: Emerging Europe and Central Asia” on academic reputation indicator. In a group of universities UrFU holds 50 position, in the overall ranking - 59 position and 13 place in Russia.

The university shows substantial growth in citation index indicator, which increased by more than 20%compared to the previous year.

"A noticeable growth is characterized by positions improvement in four subject areas: natural sciences, life sciences and medicine, engineering and technology, social sciences and management, - says the rector of Ural Federal University Victor Koksharov. - Our initiatives on the project 5-100 implemented by the Russian Ministry of Education and aimed at enhancement global competitiveness of the leading Russian universities among the world's leading research and education centers allowed us to achieve high results."

In the field of Natural Science UrFU took 31 place in the rankings and 9 position among Russian universities. The high recognition of researches results achieved by UrFU scientists and publications in leading journals such as Science, Nature Physics, Nature Nanotechnology, etc contribute to promotion of the university. The authors of publications include world-renowned scientists-researchers, such as Professor Vladimir Shur (h-index 24), Michael Katznelson (h-index 69).

The 8th position among all Russian universities UrFU took in Life Science & Medicine. UrFU has experience of the successful development of new anti-infective, anti-tumor, anti-fever, anti-diabetic medicines. UrFU Chemical and Pharmaceutical Center became one of the most successful projects of "Pharma 2020" program. In addition to medicines development, new educational and research laboratory complex will train highly qualified engineering personnel.

In 2014, the university licensed three new majors in the field of fundamental medicine: medical biochemistry, medical biophysics and medical cybernetics. Future graduates will become doctors - specialists in the diagnosis of diseases and the use of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.

In 2013-2014, the university established Center for radiation sterilization, Science laboratory "Mathematical modeling in physiology or medicine with the use of supercomputer technologies." The installation of the advanced research equipment and the launch of inter-regional "Cyclotron Centre of nuclear medicine" are in the process.

In the field of Social Sciences & Management the university took 12 position among the Russian universities. One example of the international recognition of the competence of the university in this field was the inclusion of UrFU scientific journal “Quaestio Rossica”, established in 2013, in a new index on the platform Web of Science - Emerging Sources Citation Index. “Quaestio Rossica” is the only magazine in Russia, which entered the new index.

UrFU is one of five Russian universities and the only one non-capital university, accredited by EPAS.

The university took 16 position among Russian universities in Engineering & Technology. UrFU in collaboration with concern "Almaz-Antey", the International Corporation IPG Photonics Corporation has created Regional Engineering Center "Laser and additive technologies". It is the first center on the base of which industrial enterprises can receive engineering services in the field of laser and additive industries and unique products based on these technologies.

In October 2014, the governor of the Sverdlovsk Region approved a comprehensive program aimed at the revival and development of the Ural School of Engineering through the creation of a system of continuous technical education through the integration of educational institutions, industrial enterprises and academic institutions.

In 2015, the chairmanship of the Russian Federation in the BRICS group has decided to establish  the Network Center of Excellence of BRICS in the field of Material Sciences on the base of Ural Federal University. This center aroused interest in the wider business community and institutions of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Russia's presidency in the BRICS also noted the creation of the Center for BRICS Studies at UrFU, which serves as the information-analytical and coordinating center in a number of international network projects, including the creation of BRICS Network University and coordination of the Russian universities in BRICS Universities League.
