UrFU entered QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017 in the fields of Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Quality of research and increase in the international academic reputation allowed the leading university in the Ural region to be included in one of the world’s most prestigious rankings

In the new edition of QS World University Rankings by Subject, Ural Federal University maintained the previous year’s position in the field of Mathematics, and, for the first time, it entered the rankings in the subject areas of Physics/Astronomy and Electrical Electronic Engineering.

“The university’s performance is linked to the implementation of a large-scale program for research and publication activity support, as well as to the launch of the strategic academic units within UrFU’s structure”, comments Victor Koksharov, the Rector of Ural Federal University. “These two indicators – increase in the academic reputation and increase in the number of quality scientific publications and the number of citations – have led to such a serious growth of the University’s international visibility level”.  

UrFU was ranked among top 251-300 world universities in Mathematics, and entered the group 351-400 of the best universities in Physics/Astronomy and Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

“Entering a prestigious international ranking in the subject areas considered to be priority for UrFU is a significant achievement for the University”, says UrFU’s Vice-rector for International Relations Maxim Khomyakov. “It is also important to mention that in a number of subject areas the University is on the threshold of entering the ranking; all in all the University is being evaluated by the ranking agency in 21 subject areas, in which Ural researchers have a large number of quality publications as well”.

UrFU Vice-rector for Research, Vladimir Kruzhaev, adds that the University has good chances of entering the ranking in two more subject areas next year, which are Economics and Materials Science.

“Increasing positions in the subject rankings in Physics and Engineering has already been planned in the University’s Roadmap”, underlines Vladimir Kruzhaev. “A significant contribution to the University’s performance in the ranking in Physics was made by the Institute of Natural Science and Mathematics and the Institute of Physics and Technology, while the Ural Power Engineering Institute and the Institute of Radio Electronics and Information Technology made their input into the result achieved in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering field”.

This year, QS agency is publishing the seventh edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject. The rankings are based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact. This year, QS evaluated 4438 universities and analyzed over 127 million citations. This new edition features a record 46 subjects.
