The need for a higher educational establishment in the Ural region was already obvious as early as in the 18th century, but it wasn’t until 1878 that the first university east of the Volga river was opened in Tomsk. In the 1890’s, the dispute on the topic of opening a university in Ekaterinburg started again with renewed vigor.
In 1920, the project of the Ural University was being developed by the Council of People’s Commissars, an authority of the highest level.
Vladimir Lenin signed a decree “On establishment of the Ural State University”, an educational institution of the European type, consisting of six independent institutes: the Mining Institute, the Polytechnic Institute, the Medical Institute, the Agricultural Institute, the Pedagogical Institute, the Institute of Social Sciences, and the Workers’ Faculty. The Polytechnic Institute comprised five faculties: the Faculty of Mechanics, the Faculty of Chemistry, the Faculty of Forest Engineering, the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Metallurgy.
The first group of six young engineers graduated from the University.
Ural State University changed its name to Ural Polytechnic Institute.
The two decades between 1920 and 1940 saw new scientific areas and schools emerging, successful studies of metallurgical processes and electric chemistry, first scientific foundations laid for construction of chemical engineering apparatus, and the beginning of highly qualified personnel training. The interconnections between science and production were growing rapidly.
