“The university is well developed and organized”
Syria
Bachelor in Geology, University of Damascus
Russian language course, Ural Federal University
I’m in Russia in order to continue my study for the master’s degree. I made this decision after I lost my job in an oil company because of the Syrian crisis. My parents live in the capital of Syria, Damascus, my brother lives and works in England.
I study Russian, it’s very interesting, but it is not easy to learn it quickly.
We study five subjects: Grammar, Writing, Listening, Dialogs Practice and Reading. We read Russian fairytales and stories in Russian. I really like the subjects, the methodology of teaching is new, professional, not boring at all, I also want to mention how passionate and patient the teachers are, and I really appreciate that.
I can tell that the university is well developed and organized, which makes it very helpful and convenient for foreign students.
I knew about Russia since I was 6 years old because I have been here at that age with my family in order to visit my uncle who studied in Moscow and was married to a Russian woman, so I’m somehow familiar with the faces, the language, the music, even though I was a little kid, I still remember how big is the Red Square, remember how well organized the soldiers were. It was kind of interesting that I was there in September 1991, in the last 3 months of Soviet Union, and went back to Syria in the end of November, when things started to change. When I was in Russiafor the first time I played with Russian kids of my age and also played with a dog I still remember its name was “Lena”, and here I watched Cheburashka for the first time, and I can say that he is still my Russian hero.
Now I’m here again after almost 22 years, but now it is the Russian Federation.Things have changed, of course. I have good knowledge of the Russian history, because my parents were interested in the Soviet Union, and in our home in Syria we have a lot of various Russian books translated into Arabic. We are up to date by the internet and the media, so I can say:“Yes, reality met my expectation about Russia but of course not one hundred percent”.
Russia is a great country, with a great history, it is playing a major role in the world and it has a lot of opportunities, but I think the start is always very difficult and especially in Russia, honestly it’s a hard country to live in, the weather is freezing cold, it’s just amazing how people can make life possible here, and I must say that the people of Yekaterinburg are very kind and helpful especially when I get lost or try to reach a certain place.
Russia celebrates special days in a unique way such as, the 8th of March and the 9th of May. I’m really excited about them and very happy to be here!
