"I love UrFU!"
Kenya
Russian language course, Ural Federal University
My name is Rogers Sure. I’m from Nairobi, Kenya. I love history and that comes with a desire to travel. Russia is the seventh country I have visited but first outside Africa.
I’m currently studying Russian language with hopes of securing admission to study engineering in the next academic year.
The Russian language course is very intense and well-structured for beginners. Unlike some in my class, I came to Russia without prior contact with the language. I memorized a few words during my transfer in Istanbul but nothing much.
The program is divided into 6 sections; grammar, reading, listening, phonetics, speaking and writing. I have so far taken a fancy to grammar, reading and writing. They are my favorite lessons. I’m struggling with phonetics, I think, largely because of my Nilotic background.
I love UrFU. I love the staff and students. Everyone I have been in contact with has been nothing but helpful. It’s a great learning environment!
Actually I knew a lot about Russia, though it is not a popular subject in my part of the world. One has got to be really interested to look beyond what’s in the news and films. I did not have any expectations, but for the six months that I have been here, I love every bit of my stay.
What is my most vivid, unusual and interesting impression of Russia? It’s hard to make a generalization, but one thing that has caught my attention is how introspective Russians are. At least the ones I have interacted with. Also, they seem to care about what’s going beyond the borders of Russian Federation and this makes for great conversations. Admittedly, I find it difficult to approach a random Russian person if you do not speak Russian. But Russians are nice people once familiarity is established.
