"I enjoy Russia so much and feel like home here"
Bulgaria
Bachelor in Marketing, University of Economics Varna
Russian language course, Ural Federal University
My name is Vesselina. I come from Bulgaria. I really like travelling, and I am especially interested in meeting new people and new cultures.
Right now I study only Russian language in a one-year preparatory course organized by the university. In summer I am supposed to pass the exam, and, if everything goes well, next academic year I will begin my study for a Master’s degree, majoring in “Organisation of Youth Work”
All my current subjects are connected with different aspects of the Russian language — we have writing, reading and grammar classes, we also attend classes of audio- and phonetic exercises. So far I like it — it is relatively easy for me to understand the material, because of my Slavic background, so I don't need to struggle that much learning Russian. I hope that till the end of the academic year we will progress enough to pass the exam and also to be able to use the language properly in the academic environment.
What I like about UrFU is how international it is – there are so many students, basically from all over the globe. Here I have the opportunity to expand my horizons much beyond the level they were before and also to gain a lot of new intercultural experience. I really appreciate this a lot!
Another thing, which I strongly admire, is the fact that there are quite many young people working at the university. It is really great that an institution with such a long history and traditions is already open for young people and provide a start for their careers, it lets young people to contribute their energy, creativity and new ideas – because the youth always have a lot of valuable things to offer. In my opinion, such practice could be a good example for many other institutions. And because of this fact I am always more tolerant and accept better the situations when something goes wrong :)
I could say that I was quite much familiar with Russia before moving to Ekaterinburg – in my hometown we have thousands of Russian tourists coming every summer and also Russians, who permanently live there. As a child I was watching “Nu pogodi” and I was reading Russian fairy-tales. Also I have already been to Russia once and I have friends from different parts of the Russian Federation. So when I came here I was more or less familiar with most of the things and I didn't have any cultural shock or anything like this. Also, I think Ekaterinburg is kind of similar to many other big cities in other countries. But I would like to travel to the other parts of Russia and maybe to visit some smaller towns and villages – I am sure that there will be surprising and exciting things to see :)
What is the most vivid, unusual and interesting impressions of Russia? Well, I must say that I had this impression before I came here and it just got stronger. I like how natural, warm and genuine the Russian people are. And by saying this I mean not only the people, but also the communication and the interactions between them. It really reminds me of Bulgaria and other Eastern-European countries and that's why I enjoy Russia so much and feel like home here.
