“Ekaterinburg definitely fulfilled my expectations and I am glad I made this choice”
Slovakia
Student at Masaryk University, Czech Republic
Exchange Student at Ural Federal University
I am a Slovakian studying in the Czech Republic. I love traveling really much and that is why I have spent several semesters abroad. Before I came to Russia, I was barely able to speak Russian. I decided to study here in order to learn the language. At first, I only came for one semester. Then I found some good friends and I also liked the university. This is my fourth semester in Ekaterinburg and I do have no problems to communicate in Russian anymore.
My major at Masaryk University is business management. As an exchange student here I have got a great opportunity to make my own list of classes I want to attend. It is great because I can meet many more students than I would meet if I was always in the same group as a regular student.
I have started to study here in September 2012. Back then I did not know that I might have stayed longer than just one semester I had the scholarship for.
During the semester I try to study 7 subjects. Basically I study the courses I like (e.g. foreign languages – English, German and of course Russian) and the obligatory courses that need to be completed at my home university. I like studying here because you can choose both English and Russian courses, the teachers are willing to help you anytime you need their help and they can explain everything in a friendly way, especially, when they see you are not a native speaker.
Ural Federal University is a great university, a home for many Russian as well as international students, what makes studying here very interesting. You can meet many people from different countries, cultures. Although the university development is still in progress, it is already on a high level.
I must say I already knew quite much about Russia before coming here. Both Slovakia and Russia are Slavic countries, we have had a common history and our cultures are not that different.
I keep on being greatly impressed by people here. They like gathering, they do not make any differences between other people, and they are always ready to help if needed. The Russians are very spontaneous, especially some Russian women who may start dancing at a bus-stop in order to warm up a bit while waiting for the bus. I find it funny and very nice. I also appreciate that if you wait in a queue you do not need to be afraid of losing your position, even if you do not have any number. You only must remember who stands in front of you.
When I was choosing the city I wanted to study in, a friend of mine, who studies here, helped me a lot. He gave me the necessary information and since I wanted to visit Asia, the choice was made quite soon after I got the first e-mail from him.
Ekaterinburg definately fulfilled my expectations and I'm glad I made this choice!
