Miloš Zeman won a second five-year term “with even stronger mandate”

According to the results of voting, the President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman, who became the Doctor honoris causa of Ural Federal University last year, was re-elected for a new term.

‘The decision to award the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa to Miloš Zeman was made by UrFU Academic Council on the initiative of our Graduate School of Economics and Management. Mr. Zeman taught at the Prague Higher School of Economics, was engaged in research and has a great interest in economics,’ recalled the Rector of UrFU, Victor Koksharov.

The press service of Kremlin reports that the President of Russia Vladimir Putin congratulated Miloš Zeman with the re-election. The Russian leader emphasized that the results of the vote ‘confirmed the high authority of Miloš Zeman as an experienced and responsible politician, implementing the interests and aspirations of the Czech people’.

The second round of presidential elections finished in the Czech Republic on Saturday. According to RIA Novosti, after the counting of the results at the polling stations Zeman received 51.45% of the vote in the second round, 2.84 million voted for him. His opponent Jiří Drahoš received 48.54% of the vote, 2.68 million people voted for him. Nearly 66.58%, 8.5 million of registered voters took part in the elections.

In a speech to his supporters, Zeman announced that he would try not to disappoint his fellow citizens.

‘Five years ago in the first presidential elections 2.7 million citizens voted for me and now  the number reached 2.8 million. So for the next five years I have even stronger mandate and I promise not to disappoint the citizens of the Czech Republic in my activities,’ he said.
