Experts Told About the Role of Genes in the Life of Plants

The University hosts a seminar "Bioresources for Biotechnology and Bioengineering"

The university discusses such fundamental biological problems as the regulation of replication in prokaryotic organisms, the evolution of the photosynthetic apparatus in the process of plant acculturation, omic studies in the field of plant stress-physiology, the role of individual genes in the vital activity of plants.

‘I am engaged in research of negative and positive effects, possible interactions of biologically active substances of fungi with physiological and biochemical functions of plants, including growth, illnesses and stressful counteraction,’ says postgraduate student of UrFU Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Dominique Savio. ‘For example, the active substances of endophytic fungi have demonstrated many functions that include protection of host plants from pests such as pathogenic bacteria, fungi, insects, predators and others, as well as stresses from the environment and other functions. Our goal is to use some of these bioactive substances (phenols, flavonoids, proteins, amino acids) to study their effect on plant functions.’ 

Genetic regulation of fruit ripening, molecular genetic methods of plants protection from pathogens, symbiosis of plants with other organisms were discussed by participants of the Russian-Chinese bilateral seminar "Biological Resources for Biotechnology and Bioengineering." The event took place on August 5 - 8 at the Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of Ural Federal University. The seminar is the second in the history of cooperation of professors of the School of Life Sciences from the Chinese University of Inner Mongolia and biologists of UrFU. The first meeting took place in December 2017 in China.

‘The first meeting result of the was the signing of an agreement between the School of Life Sciences of the University of Inner Mongolia and the Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of Ural Federal University and an agreement on the internship of young Russian scientists in the laboratories of the University of Inner Mongolia,’ explains Irina Kiseleva, the head of the Department of Experimental Biology and Biotechnology. ‘The purpose of this seminar is further development of Russian-Chinese cooperation in the field of education and science, promotion of English-language master's and postgraduate programs in Biology, Ecology and Nature Management’.
