New THE Ranking: Success of Ural Computer Scientists Noted by Experts

UrFU Entered the list of best world universities in computer sciences

Ural Federal University entered the group 501-600 of THE Computer Science Subject Ranking for the first time. New lists of the best universities in the world by subjects were published on November 29 by Times Higher Education.

“In computer science, success of a research work is measured by the rigorous selection at international conferences of the two leading series: the European STACS and American STOC,” says Alexander Germanenko, Director of UrFU Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. “This year, the work of our young scientist, Dmitry Kosolobov, and the joint work performed by Professor Arseny Shur and his colleagues from Poland were selected by STACS, and Professor Mikhail Volkov joined the program committee of the association’s conference.”

According to the Institute administration, a significant contribution to the growth of the university’s visibility in the world community, in addition to joint research, internships and visits from representatives of leading centers of theoretical informatics, is made by major international computer science events held at UFU, in particular, the DLT (Developments in Language Theory) conference.

The DLT series is the world's main conference on the analysis of symbolic sequences (words) and sets of such sequences — languages, adds Germanenko. “A conference from this series was once held in Russia, and the choice of Ekaterinburg reflects international recognition of the achievements of the established school of mathematics at the university.” 

Experts emphasize that the formation of world-class scientific groups in computer science is the result of many years of work. It was estimated that every sixth student at Ural Federal University is studying a major one way or another connected with information technology.

 “170 first-year students are studying on a new undergraduate program, Software Engineering, at the Institute of Radio-electronics and Information Technology. We also opened an enterprise-based academic department of Sberbank this year”, says Ilya Obabkov, director of the Institute. The introduction of project-based learning plays an important role: a lot of bachelors and undergraduates solve real problems of IT companies, develop projects based on their own ideas or participate in scientific research. This increases the recognition and academic reputation among the expert community of employers and universities.”

Obabkov adds that the formation of curricula and the learning process are carried out with the participation of SKB Kontur, UBRD, Naumen, NPO of Automatics, JetStyle, Novator Design Bureau, USBC, ARGIN and other companies.

Ural Federal University also entered the 801+ group of THE Engineering & Technology Subject Ranking.

In drawing up the subject rankings, THE uses the same performance indicators as in the general World Ranking: universities are assessed on the quality of teaching, research, citation, international interaction and income from production activities.
