Ural Snowboarder Made It into the World Universiade by Winning the Russian Snowboarding Cup

Alexander Smelov joined the Russian student team

The Ural Federal University athletes will represent Russia at the XXIX World Winter Universiade this year. Alexander Smelov, a graduate student of the Ural Federal University Institute of New Materials and Technologies, is one of the five student athletes to compete. He will take part in the "Snowboard" category.

‘I passed the selection for the Universiade in December 2018, having won the competitions for the Russian Snowboarding Cup,’ Alexander Smelov says. ’For me, the Universiade is a great opportunity to show my strength. Following it, I will take part in the World Snowboarding Cup.’

This year, Alexander managed to distinguish himself by taking bronze medals at both the Russian Championship and the World Grand Prix series. Besides the snowboarder Alexander Smelov, Evgeniya Zakharova (short track speed skating), Tamara Voronina and Alexei Shevchenko (biathlon), and Tatyana Kuznetsova (bandy) will compete in Krasnoyarsk on March 2—12.
