UrFU Scientists’ Project Listed in 100 Best Inventions of 2018

Rospatent noted the new method of obtaining crystals of silver and thallium halide solid solutions

Scientific research by scientists of Ural Federal University on creation of new optical products and infrared light guides has been recognized at the federal level: the invention has entered the list of 100 best inventions of 2018 by the Russian Federal Agency for Intellectual Property, Patents and Trademarks (Rospatent).

 “The purpose of our work was obtaining crystals of silver and thallium halide solid solutions,” says Alexandr Korsakov, head of the Laboratory of Fiber Technology and Photonics at the Institute of Chemical Engineering, UrFU. “Optical products and infrared lightguides made of these materials are necessary for making of fiber lasers, amplifiers and fiber-optic systems. They are widely used in spectroscopy, low-temperature infrared pyrometry, as well as for transmitting infrared radiation from CO (5.3–6.2 μm) and CO 2 lasers (9.2–11.4 μm), including the conditions of increased background radiation.

The main credit in achieving such results, according to Aleksandr Korsakov, belongs to the head of the research area Lia Zhukova, Chief Researcher at the Academic Department of Physical and Colloidal Chemistry. She stood at the origins of the creation of the polycrystalline component base for optics and photonics of the middle infrared range of the spectrum.

The list of the best inventions of 2018 is published at the Agency’s website. It includes several categories, such as Computer Technology, Transport, Energy, Metallurgy and Mechanical Engineering, Organic Compounds and Pharmaceutics, and others.
