UrFU Postgraduate Student’s Idea Supported by President

Viktor Fedotov suggested using the University’s technological solutions in the Pharma-2030 strategy

Using the technological solutions developed by the scientists of Ural Federal University is necessary in implementation of the strategy of Russia’s pharmaceutical industry development until 2030, says Vladimir Putin.

The topic of the country’s pharmaceutical industry development and creation of pharmaceutical drugs, which the University has been successfully working on for a long time, was brought up at the meeting with the President last Tuesday by a postgraduate student of UrFU’s Institute of Chemical Engineering Viktor Fedotov and Professor Valery Charushin, member of the University’s supervisory board, academician, head of the Ural Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

‘We are now working on a new program of pharmaceutical industry development,’ said Putin. ‘It should be ready by the end of 2019, the Government is working on it. And as far as I know, it is calculated for the period of time until 2030. Therefore, this component should by all means be considered there – the use of our own achievements.’ 

The most well-known example is the antidiabetic drug Triazavirin, created at the Ural State Technical University-UPI (now UrFU) together with researchers from the Academy of Sciences.

‘A unique research and educational complex has formed in the Urals,’ said Charushin to the President. ‘22 Ural academic institutes were formed from the graduates of the Ural region, mainly graduates of Ural Federal University. We are enjoying close integration: many joint projects and industrial partners.’

In his address to the President, Viktor Fedotov pointed out that enterprises do not often take the molecules developed by the researchers for clinical trials, so incentive mechanisms are needed. Vladimir Putin stressed that such component as using own achievements must be considered in the Pharma-2030 strategy.

Vladimir Putin paid a visit to Ural Federal University on July 9. The president held a meeting with students and attended the exhibition of innovative projects developed by UrFU startuppers. The issues of import phase out, development of new technologies and the organization of all-Russian “Career Night” and Universiade 2023 and several other topics were discussed during the meeting.

Before visiting Ural Federal University, the President attended the International Industrial Trade Fair INNOPROM and took part in the Global Manufacturing & Industrialization Summit (GMIS).
