The postgraduates of the Ural Federal University’s Institute of chemical engineering Marina Tokareva and Kingsley Duru Chidumaga will study in Macquarie University (Sydney). In Australia, they will proceed their research work and after defending their dissertations twice will receive PhD degrees from Macquarie University.

Marina Tokareva's paper is devoted to the study of metal-catalyzed transformations of 1, 2, 3-thiadiazoles and other diverse five - and six-membered O -, N- and S-containing heterocyclic systems, unobtainable by traditional methods.

Kingsley Duru Chidumaga’s thesis is to study the synergistic effect of isoflavones and inonotus obliquus (fungus) extract on extra-acute insulin-producing cells, heart and blood vessels in rats with type II diabetes induced by streptozotocin.

"We have received more than 30 applications in diverse specialties. Of these, ten were selected. Then the Macquarie university representatives chose five. Only two candidates got to the final," explains the head of International scientific projects department Anna Oykher.

"When selecting candidates, the main factors that are looked at are the future research outline, as well as the candidate’s scientific publications," says Anna. — The Committee takes into account everything: the impact factor of the periodical, the number of authors published, the correspondence of content of the article with thesis, et cetera. That is, candidates must demonstrate a very serious research groundwork."

UrFU launched a joint postgraduate program with the Macquarie University in 2018. The program involves work of a graduate student with two supervisors: one representing UrFU, the other - Macquarie University. Part of the dissertation research work is conducted in Russia, part - in Australia, where graduate students spend one or two years of study. For the duration of their stay in the country, they receive a grant covering tuition fee, plane trip to and from Australia and a monthly scholarship for accommodation and expenses.
