Students From France Successfully Presented Projects on Machine Learning, Passed an Online Internship at UrFU

Students of the French partner university ENSEA, who completed an online internship "Machine Learning in Energy" at the Ural Federal University, successfully defended their projects.

This year, six students from France completed an online internship at UrFU. The Department of International Educational Programs, together with Ural Power Engineering Institute and Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (INSM UrFU), organized an internship for ENSEA. The SVEL Company Group, one of the leading Russian manufacturers of electrical equipment, was the partner company.

The leaders of the internship Stanislav Eroshenko and Alexandra Khalyasmaa (faculty members of Ural Power Engineering Institute) acted as moderators for the online defense of projects. The expert commission included Deputy Director of the Department of International Educational Programs, International Relations Manager of ENSEA Stefanie Flint Luh, PR-manager of SVEL Company Group Anastasia Adamovich, head of the SVEL Design Group Philip Kuzmin, Pavel Matrenin, Senior Lecturer at Novosibirsk State Technical University, and INSM UrFU assistant Alexander Bersenev. The expert commission actively participated in the defense: asked questions and made comments after the presentation of each of the participants.

The task of the project from SVEL Company Group sounded like this: "Power Transformer Technical State Assessment." Each of the participants presented their own version and an algorithm for solving it.

The expert committee identified two finalists for the internship - Josef Salah and Tusan Thalayasingam. Students will have the opportunity to publish research results in a journal indexed in Scopus and Web of Science.

“I hear great responses from students and am happy that we are cooperating with UrFU. I will definitely come to Yekaterinburg. Due to the situation in the world, the plans of many could not be realized, for example, one of our students had to go for an internship in Germany, which was canceled at the last moment. Thank you for not backing down and holding the event, ”says Stephanie Flint Luh.

All students received certificates from UrFU on the internship and a letter of recommendation from the SVEL group. The Department of International Educational Programs has prepared memorable gifts from UrFU, which will be sent to France.

“For us, the internship was a way out of our comfort zone, but we are glad that we were able to implement it together. All the guys have done tremendous work on the projects, and we would like to continue further work on the projects in the format of writing articles. We will be glad if in the future students can come to Yekaterinburg and visit our university and the SVEL Company Group, as well as personally meet with teachers and organizers, ”says Stanislav Eroshenko.

The project was also attended by volunteers who taught students Russian, introduced them to Yekaterinburg and prepared pancakes online.

“I want to thank the teachers and organizers. We knew from the very beginning that the internship would be top notch, based on feedback from the past. It is a pity that we did not manage to visit Russia,” says one of the students commented on the completion of the internship.

This is the fifth internship at UrFU for ENSEA students.
