Ural REC to Launch Breakthrough Projects in Energy Digitalization

Projects of the Ural Federal University related to the digitalization of energy can make a significant contribution to the development of the World-Class Ural Research and Education Center — ‘Advanced Industrial Technologies and Materials’. At the same time, the full-fledged implementation of such projects will directly depend on the closest possible interaction between the university and the enterprises of the Urals. This was stated by Sergey Kokin, Deputy Director of the Ural Energy Institute of UrFU for Science and Innovation, at a meeting of the Energy Committee of the Sverdlovsk Regional Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs. The central topic of the meeting was to improve the reliability of the energy complex.

Sergey Kokin highlighted breakthrough areas in the energy sector that will be developed within the REC. This is the development of a software and hardware complex for controlling a digital substation, digital models of technical diagnostics of gas turbine plants and an automatic maintenance system for electrical networks "Kanatohod" robot. In addition, much attention is paid to the management of liquid radioactive waste using CoreBrick technology and the development of non-invasive Smart sensors in the power industry. According to experts' forecasts, by 2025, financial proceeds from the implementation of these projects may amount to $ 2.5 billion per year. The committee offered to support these projects to all its participants.

Sergey Kokin noted that the project of a world-class scientific and educational center is being implemented in conjunction with projects to create world-class scientific centers on the basis of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the innovative scientific and technological center "Tatishchev".

“The activities of the centers, together with the potential of the existing regional innovation infrastructure, will allow combining the existing formats of cooperation and support measures for projects at all levels of technological readiness - from exploratory research to pilot production. It will also stimulate the development of new formats of scientific and technological cooperation. As part of their activities, REC participants will solve scientific problems and generate breakthrough solutions that are aimed at promoting the development of subjects within the REC perimeter and can bring significant economic benefits over the horizon of 5-10 years.
