The Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) entered into force on 22 January 2021

On 22 January, the Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) entered into force! From now, nuclear are legally banned.

In 2017 the General Assembly decided to convene a United Nations conference to negotiate a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading towards their total elimination. In July 2017 the TPNW was signed. It required 50 ratifications to enter into force. On 22 January 2021 the Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons entered into force. The is also known as the Nuclear Ban Treaty. Non-nuclear states (like Austria, Honduras, and Kazakhstan) initiated the process of the treaty on the nation-state level, after an international NGO-facilitated campaign (namely, ICAN) sparked the anti-nuclear weapons movement.
