Candles of Memory Were Lit In Front Of the University

The action is dedicated to the anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War

Today Ural Federal University community, as well as all Russians, celebrates the most tragic date in the history of our country - 80 years since the beginning of the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945.

At 4 in the morning, UrFU students lit exactly 1418 candles - according to the number of days of the Great War - to commemorate the beginning of the war on June 22, 1941 at 4 am. Students lit the word “Remember” out of hundreds of candles outside the university’s main building.

The Candle of Memory is a nationwide campaign. The candle is a symbol of eternal memory to the fallen heroes who defended their country during the World War II and won the right to life and freedom, fighting against Nazis. As a sign that we remember those terrible days and deeds of our ancestors, every year thousands of people gather on Memorial and Mourning Day and light candles in the morning silence in all Russian cities. The important issue is to preserve the historical memory of such events and to pass knowledge of them from generation to generation, so that they never happen again.
