The Ural Federal University and Huawei, a leading global provider of smart devices and ICT infrastructure solutions, invite students of the Sverdlovsk Region to take part in the Huawei Challenge 2022 IT competition.

The theme of this year's Huawei Challenge is optical networks. The task of the participants is to solve a case on routing and wavelength assignment in an optical network. For participation are invited the teams consisting of three students and/or postgraduate students of technical specialties from Ural Federal University. The competition will be held from March 18 to 20 in an online format. During three days the teams will develop programs in C or C++ and test them on the Timus Online Judge platform. Registration is open from February 11 to March 17.

"UrFU is a recognized leader in IT education in the region. This is mainly due to the development of new educational formats in partnership with leading employers: launching joint laboratories, implementing student projects, holding specialized hackathons, championships and other competitions on the campus of the university. Huawei's new initiative is a logical continuation of our cooperation. The university already has the Huawei ICT Academy, and five courses for students and teachers in specialized areas are being implemented," said Victor Koksharov, Rector of the Ural Federal University.

Global Internet traffic is huge and growing, and the task of optimal distribution of this traffic in the backbone optical networks is becoming more and more important.

"The problem put forward for the contest seems, at first glance, so simple in its formulation that to an inexperienced person the solution seems common knowledge. But the difficulty is that in this NP-hard problem there are no algorithms satisfactory in complexity that solve it always and optimally. That is why the contestants will get a chance to feel like real researchers: they will be able to offer a unique solution, compare it with the variants of other contestants and with the solution of Huawei experts. It will be a professional work experience for them, just like in the research center," noted Dmitry Shmelkin, Director of the Mathematical Modeling and Optimization Laboratory at the Huawei Russian Research Institute.

The Huawei Challenge 2022 winners and runners-up ceremony will be held on March 25 in the main academic building of Ural Federal University. Three teams with the most impressive results will be awarded with Huawei flagship gadgets. At the ceremony, all participants will be able to personally discuss the challenge with the organizers - technical experts from the Huawei Russian Research Institute, who worked on its development; listen to a lecture on path planning in optical networking and learn about internship opportunities at one of Huawei's research centers in Russia.
