Electrical engineering, electric power engineering, relay protection, and thermal power engineering are the main areas in which the Ural Federal University will begin training and retraining personnel for the largest power plant in Mongolia - Ulaanbaatar Thermal Power Plant 4 (TPP-4) - agreements were reached during the visit of a delegation from UrFU headed by First Vice-rector Sergey Kortov.

"In addition to cooperation on training power engineers, we have to work on eliminating the language barrier among Mongolian students and scientific research in materials science, in particular the examination of critical plant elements for defects. We should note that Central Asia remains one of the key regions in the world for the development of international power projects. The growth in demand for energy resources is related to economic growth in the countries of the region, Mongolia in particular," Kortov said.

The company was presented by Chulunbatar Nyamdava, a 2014 graduate of the UrFU Ural Power Engineering Institute and Station Engineer on Duty. He noted, in particular, that due to the working graduates of Ural Federal University, a turbine from the Ural Turbine Works was installed at TPP-4 in Ulaanbaatar.

Representatives of specialized departments and institutes of UrFU - among them Sergey Kokin, Konstantin Aronson, Tatiana Bogatova and Sergey Mamyachenkov - joined the discussion of the university delegation with the plant management about improving the reliability of boiler units and steam turbines, control program for plant pipes and heat power equipment, as well as the application of the university scientists' developments in the technological processes of the plant.

We would like to add that the executive director of TPP-4, Urzhindorzh Timurhuyag, an UrFU alumnus, received a letter of commendation on behalf of the rector of the UrFU Victor Koksharov for his active participation in the development of relations with the university.

The modernization of Ulaanbaatar's coal-fired TPP-4 remains a pressing issue for Mongolia's industry. The country is increasing its power generation while remaining an energy deficit country, with the capacity of its power plants only slightly exceeding 1 GW, with the need for four times as much by 2030.

Forty-nine Mongolian students are studying at UrFU, including nine from the Erdenet Ore Mining and Processing Plant.

More than 2,000 graduates of the Ural Federal University work in Mongolia, many of whom hold high positions in politics, industry, culture and science. In 2013, the Mongolian Alumni Association was established.
