University Representatives Discussed Prospects for the Development of International Activities

Head of Rossotrudnichestvo met with the heads of the Russian universities

On February 7, Yevgeny Primakov, the head of the Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs, Compatriots Living Abroad, and International Humanitarian Cooperation (Rossotrudnichestvo), met with the heads of the federal universities of Russia. The participants discussed how to effectively promote Russian education and the Russian language abroad. This requires taking into account the capabilities of Rossotrudnichestvo and the universities themselves.

Evgeny Primakov spoke about how Russian houses in different countries can be useful for universities. He noted that the most effective way to promote Russian universities abroad is to involve foreigners in events with the participation of representatives of educational institutions and to hold educational exhibitions. This year the agency has already planned exhibitions in 22 countries, including the CIS, Asia and the Middle East.

University rectors suggested ways of creating a system of preparatory faculties for future foreign students abroad. They discussed the prospects of opening and developing branches of Russian universities abroad, including cooperation with large Russian companies. Representatives of educational institutions asked the Russian houses to help them collect data on personnel needs of various countries. Universities need this information in order to prepare specialists for specific regions of the world in a more targeted and efficient way. The parties also agreed to work together with Rossotrudnichestvo on an information agenda abroad.

The participants of the meeting discussed the prospects of increasing the number of foreign students and postgraduates, double degrees and scholarships for foreign students. They also discussed joint activities within the framework of the Decade of Science and Technology in Russia, as well as the participation of universities in international programs of Rossotrudnichestvo.

The meeting was attended by the rectors of various Russian universities. Among them were Victor Koksharov, Rector of the Ural Federal University, and Sergey Tushin, Vice-Rector for International Relations of the university.
