UrFU Prepares to Open International University in China

The establishment of the Luoyang-Ural University, the International University Sports Festival and preparations for the Russian-Chinese EXPO in Ekaterinburg - these were the topics discussed by Victor Koksharov, Rector of the Ural Federal University, and Cui Shaochun, Consul General of China in the Ural capital. Today he visited the university for the first time since his appointment.

Cui Shaochun expressed his gratitude to the Rector for supporting Chinese students. For his part, the Rector noted that the university is proud of the Chinese graduates of various years and recalled that there is a branch of the UrFU Alumni Association in Beijing.

"We are establishing a joint Russian-Chinese international university in Luoyang, Henan Province," - Victor Koksharov said, adding that he would visit the future campus next week. - the UrFU and Henan University of Science and Technology have done a lot of preliminary work. All the necessary legal agreements have been signed. The university has received support from the People's Government of Henan Province and Luoyang City, as well as from Yevgeny Kuyvashev, the Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region, and the Ministry of Higher Education and Science of Russia."

The Rector emphasized that it is planned to open five or six bachelor's programs with an annual enrollment of up to 500 students in the first stage of the joint university. In the second stage, it is planned to open another 20 bachelor's programs and five to seven master's programs with an annual enrollment of up to 2,000 students. The total enrollment is expected to reach 10,000 students in 2027.

"It is planned to open programs in the fields of Information Technology, Engineering, Economics and Management," - added Victor Koksharov. - The Luoyang People's Government is ready to provide the joint university with four new buildings. These will include 58 laboratories, 64 classrooms, 30 teaching and research classrooms and office spaces, along with four 116-seat lecture halls. For the second stage of the project, a 60-hectare plot of land for the construction of the new campus has already been allocated."

The university also notes an increase in the number of joint scientific publications by university scientists with Chinese colleagues. Last year, the number increased by more than 30%. According to the Consul General, this is an excellent indicator and a good sign for further cooperation in the field of science and technology.

There are 1,677 Chinese students studying at UrFU. The university cooperates with 46 universities and scientific organizations in China. The university has Confucius Institute. Also, UrFU is a member of the Association of Technical Universities of Russia and China, and of the SCO and BRICS network universities.

The university is carrying out five double degree educational programs with the North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power. Another four double-degree programs are conducted with the Hainan College of Economics and Business. There is a network program of "Foreign Regional Studies" with Heilongjiang University. A 2+2 bachelor's degree program with simultaneous study of the Russian language in the first two years of study with the Dalian University.
