UrFU Plans to Increase Mongolian Student Enrollment Through Targeted Training

The Ural Federal University plans to increase the number of students from Mongolia. The university is going to organize the training of a group of 11 Mongolian students in Ekaterinburg within the joint educational program of the 2+2 Bachelor's degree program "Nonferrous Metallurgy". The training will start in September. The agreement was reached as a result of negotiations between the university and the Erdenet Mining Corporation.

"In addition to the educational program, we will offer students excursions to the leading enterprises of the region. We will continue our cooperation in the field of science. Our specialists are ready to offer technologies for utilization of sulfurous gases in the form of elemental sulfur by carbon-thermal reduction, extraction of precious and rare metals from molten smelting products, and a number of other developments," said Victor Koksharov, the rector of the Ural Federal University.

Yondon Gelen, General Director of Erdenet Mining Corporation, noted that the company has no doubts about the university's competence.

The university will train twenty more people in Master's programs for the two largest combined heat and power plants in the country, CHPP-3 and CHPP-4. Agreements on this were reached with the directors of the enterprises at the meeting of Victor Koksharov with the Minister of Energy of the Republic, Battogtokh Choijil Suren, a graduate of the Ural Polytechnic Institute, and the Chairman of the Board of the Trust Fund "Mongolia" of the Ural Federal University Endowment Fund.

The first students will be admitted to the university this year, and their studies will begin in 2024.

"We will accept graduates of the Mongolian University of Science and Technology. They will first study Russian, then be trained in their specialty and return to the country to work," adds Victor Koksharov.

Sergey Mamyachenkov, the Head of the Department of Non-Ferrous Metallurgy, also offered the Mongolian side to open a target Master's program at the UrFU to train specialists for the new copper cathode production facility.

In order to teach the Russian language in the Erdenet company, the teachers of the UrFU Russian Language School will be delegated. This was announced by Yana Vysotskaya, the Head of the Division of International Educational Programs. The studies will begin at the end of May.

In addition, the university is ready to provide education in the areas of the main educational programs of Bachelor's and Master's degrees for the mining company from the academic year 2023/24.

The extended delegation of the university visited Ulaanbaatar last week. The main event was the tenth anniversary of the Mongolian Alumni Association of UPI, UrSU and UrFU. Meetings were also held with the Mongolian State University and the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST).

Forty-nine Mongolian students are studying at UrFU. Nine of them are supported by the Erdenet Mining Corporation.

More than 2,000 graduates hold high political, economic, cultural and scientific positions in Mongolia. In 2013, the first foreign branch of the Alumni Association of UPI, USU and UrFU was established in Mongolia.

Erdenet was established in 1974 as a result of geological exploration of the Erdenetiin Ovoo deposit in the late 1950s. Until 2016, Rostec State Corporation owned 49% of the company.

The company actively cooperates with Russia's Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company and MMC Norilsk Nickel, and employs dozens of graduates of UPI (now UrFU) Engineering Departments - members of the university's Mongolian Alumni Association.

UrFU trains Specialists, Bachelors and Masters on behalf of Erdenet. This year, ten people completed their training in Ekaterinburg.

The modernization of the coal-fired CHPP-4 in Ulaanbaatar remains a hot topic for the Mongolian industry. The country is increasing its power generation, but remains an energy-deficient country, with power plant capacity of just over 1 GW and a need for four times that by 2030.
