Radiofaculty launches new undergraduate program

The Bachelor's Degree Program in Artificial Intelligence Algorithms will begin this year at the Engineering School of Information Technologies, Telecommunications and Control Systems, which will provide 100 state-funded places for it. How the new program differs from other IT undergraduate programs and where its graduates will be able to work, told the program manager, Head of the IRIT-RTU Bachelor School Maxim Novikov.

"Artificial intelligence has enormous potential and can lead to dramatic changes in many areas of our lives. In the medical field, for example, it helps doctors look for abnormalities in images, reducing the risk of misdiagnosis. But image recognition tasks are not only important in the medical field: computer vision is used in the development of unmanned vehicles, where it is necessary to distinguish between road signs and the situation and to make decisions based on this data. Even in such creative tasks as writing text, artificial intelligence is gradually replacing humans. For example, text generation services can be used to create content for a website. Previously, this required copywriters," says Maxim Novikov.

The rapid development of AI technologies and their widespread application require the training of specialists. For this purpose, the Institute has launched enrollment in the new educational program "Algorithms of Artificial Intelligence" in 2023.

"We have studied the Bachelor's degree programs of other universities, interviewed the IRIT-RTF partners of UrFU, and found out that for modern AI specialists it is important not only to be able to apply known algorithms and methods, but also to develop new ones, and to run them on different computing facilities. In one case, the power of a mobile device may be enough to run it, while in another case, powerful servers capable of handling a heavy load and a significant volume of data will be required," the program manager shared his opinion.

A unique feature of the new program is a narrower specialization and an expanded list of disciplines related to artificial intelligence and machine learning. However, students will still be able to choose a programming language to implement their projects and determine which partners they will work with. And thanks to the possibility of obtaining a second degree at UrFU, every student has the right to study additional modules beyond the curriculum and master a new profession.

"After receiving a Bachelor's degree, each student will be able to realize his or her potential not only in IT companies, but also in the development of artificial intelligence for medicine, transportation, banking, and other areas. Graduates will be able to work as artificial intelligence engineers, machine learning engineers, data engineers, data analysis specialists, developers of artificial intelligence systems," Novikov emphasized.

The AI Algorithms educational program welcomes students with a strong interest in mathematics and programming. Experience in developing various computer applications is welcome, especially if it was related to machine learning and data analysis. However, the program provides for mastering the material even for those who have not immersed themselves in the specifics of AI, but have a desire to develop in this interesting and promising field.
