Scientists Developed Technologies for Aviation and Computers

Participants of the UIREC spoke about new achievements

Participants of the Ural Interregional Research and Educational Center (UIREC) talked about unique technologies of manufacturing products for the aviation industry, hot rolled products for hard-to-deform alloys, a new gas pedal for network traffic processing, the creation of drones, and many other things. The specialists took part in a press conference at TASS.

"The Ural Interregional Research and Education Center implements 57 technological projects. Nine universities, 10 scientific organizations, and 57 industrial partners are involved in their development. We have severe projects with Rosatom, in which scientists from UrFU and the Institute of High-Temperature Electrochemistry of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences participate. As part of these projects, we are creating closed nuclear fuel cycle technologies and technologies for creating a liquid salt reactor," explains Igor Manzhurov, Development Director of the Ural Interregional Research and Education Center.

UIREC specialists actively cooperate with industrial enterprises. For example, the center's scientists are working with the Ural Optical and Mechanical Plant to create a total station: a device used to measure distances and control the accuracy of topographic surveys. Together with the research and production enterprise Mashprom, specialists are creating technology for repairing and restoring mold plates of continuous casting machines using the friction stir welding method.

"Technology projects take up 80% of our center's work. However, we also have educational programs. For example, since last year we have implemented our own network Master's program for training specialists in science and technology project management at UrFU," explains Igor Manzhurov.

Another project implemented by the Ural Research and Educational Center together with the Kamensk-Uralsky Metallurgical Plant is aimed at creating a drum heating technology for processing hard-to-deform alloys. The scientists were able to lower the production cost by 8% and reduce the number of scraps produced over time.

"This development improves the technology of hot rolling of alloys, including hard-to-deform alloys. A common alloy, such as aluminum, is wound onto the drum of a hot rolling mill. However, a hard-to-deform alloy may not be wound on the drum because of the low temperature of the drum, as it is cold for it. In this case, we have solved this problem by creating a technology for drum heating before rolling. For this purpose we use a special inductor, which heats the drum for 10 to 30 minutes: this allows us to easily work with hard-to-deform alloys. This rolled product is used for the aviation industry's needs," explains Fedor Tarasov.

An equally important project that scientists are engaged in today is the development of a network traffic gas pedal. The developer of the traffic filtering module is the KIT company, part of the UDV Group. The project is being realized jointly with IRIT-RTF of UrFU with the support of UCSD. According to experts, the device will help optimize the structure of firewalls for packet data networks.

"When we move our hands, pick something up, catch falling objects, we don't think about it, because these actions are reflexive. Similarly, a network traffic processing gas pedal will help the processor not get distracted by the commands repeated many times in one second and deal specifically with control functions. These gas pedals will take care of all the chores. They will also help to create reliable filters against cyber threats for the computer networks of enterprises. It is worth mentioning that in our development all the components we use have analogs of domestic production. That is, all the products we develop can be replicated in the Russian Federation," explains Kirill Ignatkov, Deputy Director of IRIT-RTF UrFU.
