Tell Cat from Dog: International Students Taught Image Analysis to Robot

The project can be further developed to diagnose brain tumors

Over 230 foreign students from India, China, Mexico and Malaysia successfully completed their studies at the UrFU Summer University.

As their final qualifying work, the students developed projects and offered ideas on different topics: from energy to business. One of the best projects was the one named “Deep Learning for Image Analysis”, which was developed under the guidance of the an UrFU professor Andrei Sozykin.

"By using deep neural networks, the students taught the computer to recognize who is in the picture. By their efforts, the artificial intelligence has learned to distinguish a cat from a dog. In the future, one can develop the technology to fit in a medical area: it will be useful in determining brain tumors".

Andrey Sozykin also added that the Indian students are planning to finalize the project at home.

Along with the computer science topic, a project on electrical engineering named Substation-level Loading Curve Optimization, led by another UrFU professor, Stanislav Eroshenko, was among the best. This is an algorithm used to reduce the costs paid by electric grid companies and increase the stability of electricity supply to its consumers.

The third leader project, Development and Visualization of Mathematical Model for Single-channel Control of Manipulating Industrial Robot, was focused on the engineering area. It is supervised by UrFU professor Natalia Misyura.

Summer University takes place in Ural Federal University for the fourth time. In 2017, it was attended by 230 foreign students from India, China, Mexico, and Malaysia. All courses are taught by professors of the Institute of New Materials and Technologies, the Institute Civil Engineering, the Ural Power Engineering Institute, the Institute of Public Administration and Entrepreneurship, and by visiting professors in English.
