Rector of Azerbaijan University Becomes Honorable Doctor of UrFU

Kamal Mehdi oğlu Abdullayev will be awarded the title at Ural Federal University at the end of October

Rector of Azerbaijan Univerisity of Languages Kamal Mehdi oğlu Abdullayev will be  given the title of Honorable Doctor of Ural Federal University. This was decided at the meeting of UrFU Academic Council on 25 September. The award ceremony will take place at the end of October.

"At the first department meeting in this academic year we decided to nominate Kamal Abdullayev for Honorary Doctorate awards. He was approved at the meeting of Academic Council of both the Institute and the University," says Head of the Academic Department of Foreign Studies Alexander Nesterov. "Kamal Abdullayev has been cooperating with UrFU since 2005. Back then, he was the Rector of Baku Slavic University".

In 2005, Victor Koksharov as minister of International and Foreign Economic Relations of the Sverdlovsk Region initiated cooperation between UrFU and the universities of Azerbaijan. The first agreement with Baku Slavic University (BSU) was signed in the summer of 2007. Another framework agreement with BCU was signed in 2012, and two years later the Azerbaijani Studies Center was opened in UrFU. The signed treaties became the basis for cooperation with the universities of Azerbaijan.

According to Alexander Nesterov, Kamal Abdullayev takes an active part in the work of the Azerbaijani Studies Center in UrFU. Moreover, he initiated opening of the Baku International Multiculturalism Center, which UrFU signed an agreement with in 2015. There is a representative office of the Center in UrFU.

"We cooperate rather actively," explains Alexander Nesterov. "We are conducting joint research on multiculturalism. The Baku International Multiculturalism Center organizes a lot of scientific conferences, summer and winter schools. Our students take part in them. The Center covers all expenses of the students."

Kamal Abdullayev is an Azerbaijani Philologist, a famous scientist and writer. His works have been translated into many languages of the world. He is an expert of the Russian language and culture. In 2007, he was awarded the prize of Pushkin medal.  He was the Rector of Baku Slavic University from 2000 to 2014. He is a full member of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. In 2014, he was appointed the State Councilor on multiethnic, multicultural and religious affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan. He had been holding this position before becoming the Rector of Azerbaijan University of Languages this summer.
