The university is one of the top ten universities in Russia

The Shanghai ARWU (Academic Ranking of World Universities) has been published annually since 2003. The ARWU ranking is one of the most difficult for Russian universities, since for this ranking, first of all, publications in international co-authorship and in highly ranked journals, the presence of winners of the most prestigious scientific prizes, including the Nobel Prize, are important. Therefore, 30 percent of its total score depends on the number of Nobel and Fields Prize laureates among university graduates or employees. For this reason, the Russian "representation" here is usually not as numerous as in other rankings.

To be included in the subject ranking, a university must have a minimum number of scientific publications for the period 2012-2016. Publications in different disciplines have different thresholds.

Ural Federal University confidently ranks 701-800 among the world's universities and 6-7 among universities in Russia, which is a pretty good result. 

"Russian education is undoubtedly of high quality. The massive inflow of foreign applicants, including those to our university, proves this. In addition, Russian scientific schools are very competitive and in some respects even unique on a global scale. Both our own analysis and the analysis done by companies that have archives and tools for scientometrics testify to the growth of quality today. The role and importance of Ural Federal University's scientific schools is constantly growing, as evidenced by our serious advancement in subject-specific, institutional rankings," Victor Koksharov, rector, emphasized in an interview with Forbes. 

A total of more than 4,000 universities were evaluated. The rating includes Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, Novosibirsk State University, Tomsk Polytechnic University, and HSE University.
