One of the Best in BRICS: UrFU Goes Up 15 Positions in the Prestigious Ranking

Ural Federal University has entered the top 1% of BRICS universities

Ural Federal University went up 15 positions compared to the previous year in the new QS University Rankings: BRICS published yesterday. In the ranking, UrFU is on the 7th position by number of international staff members.

“In the year 2018, UrFU is in the 17% of the regional ranking of BRICS countries universities”, says the study. “Taking into account that there are about 9,000 universities in the region, this means that Ural Federal University is in the top 1% of the best BRICS universities”.

In the overall ranking, UrFU took the 63rd position, showing growth by 17 points since the first ranking of 2014-2015 was published. Among Russian universities, UrFU is one of the leaders: #8 by Academic Reputation, #15 by Employer Reputation, #14 in the country.

“The authors of the ranking evaluate our research activities as very intensive and fairly classify us as a university with a very broad spectrum of educational and scientific areas”, says UrFU’s Rector, Victor Koksharov. “Development of academic collaboration with the universities of BRICS countries remains one of our main priorities. Obviously, the effort we put into this reflects in the growing academic reputation of the University, as well as the increased number of joint publications.”

We would like to remind, that UrFU is the Russian coordinator of the university consortium of the BRICS. Recently Ekaterinburg hosted the Astronomical Data and Computation conference and the second meeting of the BRICS astronomy working group, the founding meeting of the BRICS Center for Materials Science and Nanotechnologies, the second general conference of the BRICS Network University.

For the first time, the regional QS rating for BRICS universities was published in 2014. Since then, the weight of the main indicators of the university's assessment has changed insignificantly: academic reputation, reputation among employers and the ratio of the number of the academic members to the number of students.

The experts emphasize the obvious success of the universities participating in the project "5-100". According to the administration of UrFU, the program of global competitiveness enhancement gives a serious impetus and material basis to increase visibility.
