University students win the global WorldSkills championship

Five young experts proved their excellence in Robotic welding and Digital production categories

Students of the Institute of New Materials and Technologies, Elizaveta Moseichuk and Andrei Vasilyev, representing the Ural Federal University at the WorldSkills Championship Kazan 2019 were the best in the Robotic Welding nomination (Future Skills category). Other members of the team included Andrei Samsonov, Timofey Kormin and Denis Denisov, the young researchers who also won the good credit for the University participating in the Digital Production category.

The test assignments for contestants of the “Robotic Welding” section included producing a creative clock mechanism of a given diameter, modeling of a “digital double” for the technological process, and developing production software on real equipment. Among all the participants, the team of UrFU managed to create the final product with high quality and minimal deviations. Their work was highly appreciated by the expert jury as they took the first place, ahead of teams from the USA and China.

“Robotic welding is the future of all modern industries, since automation provides for increased productivity, stable quality and also reduces time costs. One skilled worker can service up to 10 such complexes,” noted Elizaveta Moseich

According to Valentina Ovchinnikova, Deputy Vice-Rector for Project Training, Elizaveta and Andrei have been participating in various WorldSkills competencies related to industrial robots or production processes since 2015.

The Digital Production nomination tasked the participants with implementing solutions to improve production efficiency. The technological process involved full robotic processing of the piece, checking the standard compliance and applying the quality mark with a laser engraver.

Future Skills is a competition in developing professions aimed at advanced training for high-tech production in a transforming economy. This event section was only introduced in the main program of the WorldSkills World Championship in 2019.

The 45th WorldSkills Kazan 2019 World Championship in Professional Skills took place in August 22-27. It was attended by over 1,300 contestants from 63 countries and regions competing in 56 nominations. The closing ceremony of the championship will be held today at the Kazan Arena stadium.
